Why the month is named what it is here
Ujjain has a claim no other city on this site can make: the Surya Siddhanta and the siddhantic tradition after it fixed the prime meridian of Indian astronomy through this town, and Indian local time was reckoned from Ujjain's longitude for centuries before it was reckoned from anywhere else. The month here is read purnimanta. Every figure on this page is computed for Ujjain's own 75.79°E rather than inherited from that historical meridian, which sits about twenty-five minutes of clock time ahead of the modern IST reference at 82.5°E.
How a festival lands on a date
